Text: Matthew 9:18-19, 23-26

In chapters 8-9, after the Sermon on the Mount explaining the doctrine of Christ, Matthew shows the Lord Jesus Christ’s power over several things. The pattern, starting in chapter 8, is there are 3 miracles followed by a discussion about the work of the Lord. Chapter 8 begins with cleansing a leper, healing palsy, healing fever, then an account of the cost of discipleship. Next the Lord changes the weather, casts out devils, forgives sins, then describes himself as the groom making a new covenant. Last we’ll see the Lord cure a disease of blood, raise the dead, heal blindness, then talk about the harvest and the laborers.

Jesus Christ is moved by the worship of Jairus (vss 18-19)

Jairus’ is a ruler in the synagogue. That means his vocation is to minister the scriptures and services that Jesus Christ inspired before He came in the flesh. And all that would point to Jesus Christ, the man Jairus would bow before to get help from.
Jesus Christ is worthy of worship
- Jairus falls at Jesus’ feet (Mark 5:22) and worshiped him. Some things are more valuable than a person’s dignity.
- The Lord Jesus Christ accepts Jairus’ worship.
Jesus Christ is is moved by Jairus’ worship
- Jesus Christ is the mediator of the power of God to man.
- Matthew 28:18 …All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.
- John 5:36 …for the works which the Father hath given me to finish, the same works that I do, bear witness of me, that the Father hath sent me.
- John 6:39 And this is the Father’s will which hath sent me, that of all which he hath given me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up again at the last day.
- John 17:7, 9 Now they have known that all things whatsoever thou hast given me are of thee. … 9 I pray for them: I pray not for the world, but for them which thou hast given me; for they are thine.
Prayer is an opportunity for the Lord to intervene and change the natural course of events.

Jesus Christ not subject to death (vss 23-24)

The Lord Jesus Christ heads to Jairus’ house but stops along the way to address a woman with an issue of blood. While ministering to this lady with the issue of blood Jairus’ daughter dies. A messenger comes to tell them that the daughter is dead and there is no point in coming over now.
Mankind is subject to death
Man will kill himself trying not to let this body die. Man is afraid of death, but when death seizes a human being there is nothing that can be done about.
Solomon said it this way (Ecclesiastes 8:8) There is no man that hath power over the spirit to retain the spirit; neither hath he power in the day of death: and there is no discharge in that war;
Mankind is a slave to death because of sin.
- No matter how Dad & Mom feel, those feelings aren’t strong enough to give life to their daughter.
- Man is forced to accept this curse and deal with it, but man can’t undo it.
- Jesus Christ not subject to death
  - The Lord Jesus Christ never treats death with the same regard as someone who is a slave to it.
    - They say she’s dead. He says she’s asleep.
    - They say it’s too late. What is too late? I’m life!
    - They say prepare a meal for those in mourning. Jesus says prepare a meal for the little girl.
  - Hebrews 2:14-15 Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil; 15 And deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage.
  - John 10:17 Therefore doth my Father love me, because I lay down my life, that I might take it again.

Jesus Christ causes believers to experience the power of God (vss 24-26)

Remove the unbelievers
- As the Lord travels to Jairus’ house a messenger meets them on the way according to Luke and Mark to tell them the little girl is now dead. It’s too late.
- Jesus immediate response in Mark 5:36, As soon as Jesus heard the word that was spoken, he saith unto the ruler of the synagogue, Be not afraid, only believe. The Lord encourages dad in his faith. (Parents don’t want to believe their children have died anyway. And any shred of hope will be held on to by mom and dad, for days, or weeks, or even months.) So the Lord immediately addresses any unbelieving thought with comfort. Luke 8:50 But when Jesus heard it, he answered him, saying, Fear not: believe only, and she shall be made whole.
- Then they arrive at the house. Let’s get the situation established in our minds. Emotions run high enough when someone dies, but particularly when a child dies. If you and I were there while this little girl died and this man walks in saying she’s going to be alright, you and I would tell him to stop giving false hope to a grieving family. Quit your crazy talk. Let this poor family come to terms with this death and grieve.
- Matthew, Mark, and Luke all record that Jesus puts the people out that don’t believe he is going to be able to bring her back to life.
Believers get to see the life giving power of God
- The Lord allows Mom, Dad, Peter, James and John in the room. He takes the little girl by the hand and says, Sweetie, go ahead and get up. And she opens her eyes just like she woke up out of a night’s sleep. She probably says like every kid says when they wake up, I’m hungry. I suppose her body had feverishly processed much of the sugar in her blood to keep her alive right before she died. I just imagine she says, I’m hungry, because the Lord Jesus Christ immediately says when she gets up, Someone please get her something to eat (Luke 8:55).
- Now the Lord having intervened in the natural course of events to supernaturally raise Jairus’ daughter from the dead, we are back to the natural course of events. Mark 5:43…commanded that something should be given her to eat.
- Believing that Jesus Christ is the LIFE is an essential part of the gospel. If you only believe Jesus died on a cross for your sins, but you don’t believe in his resurrection, his life over death, you aren’t saved.
- Romans 10:9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
- 1 Corinthians 15:1-4 Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; 2 By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. 3 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; 4 And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:
- It is the power of the resurrection that separates you from the need to serve your vile body. It is the power of resurrection LIFE that breaks the chains of the carnal mind. Galatians 2:20 I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.
- Jesus Christ causes believers to experience the power of God
