The context in the sermon on the mount here is about laying up treasure in verses 19-23 and worry about not having enough treasure in verses 25-34. In both cases the god is mammon and it prevents someone from serving the Lord. Serving the Lord is a theme throughout the entire Bible.
Having an evil eye is like closing the blinds on the windows of your house to conceal criminal activity going on inside. The eye is the light of the body.
Pursuit of value: Everyone is after what they consider valuable. Nobody has to tell you to pursue what you find valuable.
Fasting is a hard thing to do. So you would think if someone is going to go through the trouble to fast they would at least do it right.
