Call to Worship (Psalm #29)

Text: Psalm 29

Call to worship the King (vss 1-2)

  • The mighty are called to worship the LORD
    • Give unto the LORD, O ye mighty… (vs 1)
    • David, a mighty man, commands others that are mighty to pay respect, honor, adoration, and service to Almighty God.
    • How refreshing it is to hear David, the mighty king, command other mighty men, angels, principalities and powers to worship the King of glory!  Can you imagine a president speaking this way? It would be music to your ears if you’re saved.
  • Worship the LORD with glory and strength
    • …give unto the LORD glory and strength… (vs 1)
    • Giving glory
      • Glory: Praise ascribed in adoration; honor, Honor; praise; fame; renown; celebrity.
      • Romans 1:23 And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things.
      • Romans 4:20 He staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to God;
      • Romans 15:5-9
      • 1 Corinthians 10:31 Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.
      • 2 Corinthians 4:6 For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.
    • Giving strength
      • Strength is ability and effectiveness
  • Worship that is owed to the LORD (vs 2)
    • Public gratitude is glory. One leper returns, Luke 17:18 There are not found that returned to give glory to God, save this stranger.
    • Reasonable service – Romans 12:1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.
    • James 1:17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.
  • Worship in the beauty of holiness
    • Holiness is beautiful.
      • When a husband is a husband according to God’s holy word, it is a beautiful thing.
      • When a wife…
      • When a child…
      • When a Christian…
      • Sin will make the relationship between mother and daughter ugly.  Sin will make the relationship between husband and wife painful and full of regret.
    • Sin takes the grace of God, His mercy, and revelation of His character and turns it into a greedy, diseased, filthy, blind business of the masses.  Sin had taken something special and meaningful and precious and turned it into merchandise.

Called by His power (vss 3-9)

  • Seven thunders like in Revelation 10:3-4
  • Is upon the waters
    • Creation
    • Throne room of God
    • In a boat and a storm with frightened fishermen
  • Is powerful
    • To create all things
    • To control the elements
  • Is full of majesty
    • Greatness of appearance; dignity; grandeur; the quality or state of a person or thing which inspires awe or reverence in the beholder; applied with peculiar propriety to God and his works.
  • Breaketh the cedars
  • Divideth the flames
    • Shadrach, Meshach and Abed Nego
    • Deuteronnomy 5:22-24
  • Shaketh the wilderness
  • Maketh the hinds to calve

Called by His goodness (vss 9-11)

  • Worship by those closest to Him watch the King and say, “Wow, can you believe that?!”(vs 9)
  • The King gives strength to his people.  So the King is willing to do something that most of his own people aren’t willing to do for him.
