A Psalm of God’s Righteousness (Psalm #40)

Text: Psalm 40

Most verses in this psalm are directly applied to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Blessing is in trusting (vss 1-4)

  • Answered prayer is of the Lord
  • Salvation is of the Lord
  • Established is of the Lord
  • Blessing is in trusting

Work of God (vss 5-10)

  • (vs 5) Works too many to number – John 21:25 And there are also many other things which Jesus did, the which, if they should be written every one, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that should be written. Amen.
  • (vss 6-8) Obedience over sacrifice
    • No one kept the law in the Old Testament.
    • Jesus Christ is not a way, nor is he a better to be saved, he is THE way.
    • Sacrifice and offering thou didst not desire…
    • Without faith it is impossible to please God, Hebrews 11, then follows a list of all Old Testament people and their faith.
    • 1 Samuel 15:22-23 And Samuel said, Hath the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams. For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because thou hast rejected the word of the LORD, he hath also rejected thee from being king.
    • Repetition means vanity
    • Law could not produce victory over sin
    • 1 John 3:8-9 He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.  Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.
  • Righteousness as God’s work (vs 10)
    • No one in the Old Testament went to heaven.
    • There is a difference in the righteousness of a saint to prolong the state of a city or nation.  Like Abraham praying about Sodom. Or Ezekiel talking about Noah, Job, and Daniel’s righteousness not being able to preserve Jerusalem.  But none had the righteousness of God to get into the holy city and live before God the Father. Jesus said no man cometh unto the Father but by me
    • Romans 3:19-26, Galatians 2:16, Titus 3:5,

God’s salvation (vss 11-17)
