Text: Psalm 38
This is David’s confession to the Lord. Based on the content it looks like this is something David said to the Lord in that year or so after Nathan pointed out his adultery but before he returns to the battle.
Remember mercy (vss 1-3)
- David asks the Lord to remember mercy here.
- Lord, you’ll destroy me if you rebuke me in rage.
- The Lord has gone after David’s body because of David’s sin.
- No soundness in my flesh…
Remember circumstances in light of my sin (vss 4-10)
- Sin never ends up the way it started. Because it begins pleasurable and ends in tragedy, you often forget your sin and how you got into the position you’re in.
- (vs 4) Burden of sin is more than he can bear. The cost is greater than he can pay.
- (vss 5, 7) Physical toll on David’s body as a direct result of his sin
- (vss 6, 8-10) David’s sadness, confusion, and depression are also a direct result of his sin.
- We forget disobedience when trouble enters. You forget that you made some decisions that have put you where you are.
Remember others in light of my sin (vss 11-16)
- Friends don’t want to be around David.
- My sin affects me socially.
- (vs 14) My words had no meaning because I wasn’t living up to my own standards.
- Parents
- Teachers
- (vs 16) Enemies blasphemed God when I failed
Remember the Lord in light of my sin (vss 17-22)
- Proverbs 28:13 He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy.
- 2 Corinthians 7:10 For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death.
- (vss 19-20) Some judgment is warranted, but the enemies have overstepped their bounds
- …hate me wrongfully…
- …they render evil for good…
- Don’t forsake me Lord
- Be near me Lord
- Come quick Lord
- You’re my salvation Lord
