Root of Bitterness (Genesis #52)

Esau gives up on his inheritance for temporary pleasure

  • Inheritance included:
    • A double portion of the father’s wealth (Deuteronomy 21:17)
    • He would be the head of the family
    • He would be in the Messianic line
    • He is the domestic priesthood
  • What an emblematic trade?! Esau is an illustration of every soul that yielded to the flesh at the expense of a lasting inheritance.
  • Gave up on the inheritance for a piece of meat.
  • Esau’s example
    • A profane person who gives up what is sacred for something carnal.
    • We are profane people. Why? Nothing is sacred.
    • What is hallowed in your life? What does Jesus Christ own that the world can’t touch?

Esau faints

  • Notice the word the Holy Spirit uses of Esau’s temptation, faint.
  • If thou faint in the day of adversity thy strength is small.
  • Men ought always to pray and not faint.

The bitterness takes root

  • Hebrews 12:15-17. The context is bitterness. Esau was mad at God that Jacob got the blessing because he thought the way he got it wasn’t right.
  • Next chapter, out of spite Esau marries to spite his parents (Genesis 26:34-35)
