Parental Favoritism (Genesis #55)

Parental favoritism and its effects

  • Ever since Rebekah knew the “elder shall serve the younger” and the birth of Esau and Jacob, Rebekah showed favoritism to Jacob and Isaac favored Esau. Genesis 25:28 explains this.
  • Genesis 27 where Isaac is tricked by Jacob because of Rebekah’s scheme.
  • Hebrews 12:15-17. The context is bitterness. Esau was mad at God that Jacob got the blessing because he thought the way he got it wasn’t right.

Esau despised his parents

  • Out of spite Esau married just to hurt his parents (Genesis 26:34-35, 28:6-9). That’s what’s happening here in Esau’s life.
  • Sometimes children live “down to expectations.” Instead of living “up to expectations”.

Generational bitterness

  • Esau’s bitterness becomes his childrens’ bitterness.
  • Ezekiel 35:4-5 I will lay thy cities waste, and thou shalt be desolate, and thou shalt know that I am the LORD. 5 Because thou hast had a perpetual hatred, and hast shed the blood of the children of Israel by the force of the sword in the time of their calamity, in the time that their iniquity had an end:
