Rebekah’s Manipulation (Genesis #56)

Desperate plan to deceive (vss 6-17)

  • Why do we think the best means to get what we want is deception?
  • This is a basic flaw in human understanding that the quickest way from point A to point B is a lie.
  • History and your life are full of unnecessary struggles for control and power.
  • Either apply faith or apply manipulation.

Deception is tricking the senses (vss 18-29)

  • I’m hearing something I’m not really hearing. I’m feeling something I’m not really feeling. I’m tasting something I’m not really tasting. Man’s wisdom like James says is earthly, sensual, devilish.
  • How could Isaac have dealt with this? Maybe wait until both Esau and Jacob are in the room before giving this very important blessing? Then you have a chance to compare the counterfeit with the real thing.

Deadly relationships for future generations (vss 30-40)

  • Particularly in verse 40.

Deep hatred is born in Esau (vss 41-46)

  • Perpetual hatred is born, described in Ezekiel.
  • It doesn’t fix anything for Rebekah, rather the whole thing backfires and creates more problems.
  • How could all of this be avoided? Just trust God.
