The Lord’s Secret (Proverbs #14)

The secret is like a mystery. It’s hidden. It’s not revealed in certain company. It’s unseen. The LORD’s secret is his kingdom that is hidden from the world. His hidden kingdom in its physical glory and spiritual demeanor. But Solomon says the Lord’s secret is with the righteous.

This truth is one of the major themes throughout the Bible.

First, it has to be this way because God’s secrets can only be accessed by believing God’s words

  • Matthew 11:25 At that time Jesus answered and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes.
  • John 3:3, 11-13 Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. … 11 Verily, verily, I say unto thee, We speak that we do know, and testify that we have seen; and ye receive not our witness. 12 If I have told you earthly things, and ye believe not, how shall ye believe, if I tell you of heavenly things? 13 And no man hath ascended up to heaven, but he that came down from heaven, even the Son of man which is in heaven.
  • Romans 5:1-2 Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ: 2 By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.

Second, the things that can’t be seen are of more consequence than things that are

  • 1 Corinthians 2:6-12
  • 2 Corinthians 4:3-4

Third, the mysteries of God’s kingdom are largely illustrated in many natural patterns

  • Yet the secret is also in plain sight. For instance the parables told of an unseen kingdom at work, God’s kingdom. God’s creation displayed several characteristics of this unseen and secret kingdom.
  • Mark 4:11-12 And he said unto them, Unto you it is given to know the mystery of the kingdom of God: but unto them that are without, all these things are done in parables: 12 That seeing they may see, and not perceive; and hearing they may hear, and not understand; lest at any time they should be converted, and their sins should be forgiven them.

Fourth, the secrets are hid in Christ

  • Colossians 2:1-3 For I would that ye knew what great conflict I have for you, and for them at Laodicea, and for as many as have not seen my face in the flesh; 2 That their hearts might be comforted, being knit together in love, and unto all riches of the full assurance of understanding, to the acknowledgement of the mystery of God, and of the Father, and of Christ; 3 In whom are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.
  • Kingdom of heaven is at hand starting in Matthew. How? An ambassador, in fact the king himself, has physically come into the world and is literally within arms reach – at hand.
