Who is this King of Glory?

Text: Psalm 24

Asking (vss 1-3)

    • Note the questions in verses 3, 8, and 10, Who is the King of glory?
    • The King is the same as the Shepherd in Psalm 23. The identity of the King was a mystery to the Jews because they would not believe God. David prophesied the coming King was also the LORD. Look at verse 10; the LORD of hosts, he is the King of glory. But throughout the psalm the LORD, capital L-O-R-D, looks for the man who will be King who will inherit His creation.
    • Who is the LORD? (vss 1-2)
      • He is the rightful heir and owner of all the earth.
      • He is the Creator of all things
      • Paul tells a bunch of heathen, Greek god-worshipping people that it’s Jesus Christ who is above all in Colossians 1:15-18.
    • Who shall ascend? (vss 3-6)
      • Proverbs 30:1-6 Agur says he is just a sinful man. He can’t enter into God’s heavenly holy place. The best any man can do is listen to the words of the LORD and trust them.
    • Who shall stand?
      • Hebrews 8:1 We have such an high priest, who is set on the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens; a minister of the sanctuary, and of the true tabernacle, which the Lord pitched and not man.
  • Jesus says, I am the way.

Answering (vss 4-6)

  • Clean hands
  • Pure heart
  • Not lifted himself to vanity
  • Nor lied
  • He is God’s generation
    • 24:6 This is the generation…
    • Jesus Christ is the generation out of Jacob that does the will of the Father and seeks the work of the Father.
    • Matthew 1 begins like this: the generation of Jesus Christ
    • 1 Peter 2:5-10

Ascending (vss 7-9)

  • Jesus Christ ascends and pours out the Spirit of God upon all flesh.
  • The illustration is David who has been accepted by Israel, they are his flesh and bone (2 Samuel 5:1), all are invited to become great in this kingdom (2 Samuel 5:6-9), and David brings the ark back, which is the glory of God for Israel. Then David gives gifts to the nation in 2 Samuel 6:17-19, Psalm 68:16-18
  • John 3:13, 20:17
  • Ephesians 4:8-10
