A New Marriage (Jeremiah #17)

Text: Jeremiah 31

In verse 26, Jeremiah’s dream is over and he is happy. Jeremiah’s dream started in chapter 30 and ends in 31:26.

  • The divine husband (vss 1-9)
    • The spiritual carpenter builds with lovingkindness and joy.
    • Hosea 2:14-23
  • The good shepherd will give them drink never to thirst again (vss 10-14)
  • Bitter birth of the Messiah, but hope in the end (vss 15-17)
  • The good shepherd satisfies the soul (vss 22-26)

New covenant based on personal faith (vss 27-30).

  • Jeremiah awakes with the new covenant in mind.
  • Entered by faith vs entered by birth. Personal responsibility means this covenant is no longer racial.
  • Just because you’re born a Levite doesn’t mean you’ll be a priest.
  • Just because you’re Abraham’s descendent doesn’t mean your God’s child.
  • Just because you’re a heathen doesn’t mean your the devil’s child either.
  • Ezekiel 18 is all about this.
  • All a part of this new covenant will have knowledge of God vs taught knowledge of God
    • Matthew 16:17
    • John 6:45 It is written in the prophets, And they shall be all taught of God. Every man therefore that hath heard, and hath learned of the Father, cometh unto me.

New covenant to replace the old (vss 31-34)

  • New vs old
  • Unbroken covenant vs a broken covenant (likened to a marriage)
  • Law in hearts vs law in stone
  • Forgiveness vs atonement
  • Conscience is purged vs remembrance of sins
  • Blood of Jesus Christ vs blood of animals
  • Perfects the saints vs can’t perfect saints

New and everlasting covenant (vss 35-40)

  • Everlasting versus decaying covenant
