Text: Exodus 23:20-33
Under the direction of the Angel (vss 20-23)
- The identity of the angel. The Lord sends his Angel to guide the people. Some people say this is a pre-incarnate appearance of Jesus Christ, but it’s not and I’ll show you why.
- The identity of this angel is understood to be Michael.
- However this works, this angelic personality named Michael is tasked with specific care of the nation of Israel.
- Daniel 10:13, 21 But the prince of the kingdom of Persia withstood me one and twenty days: but, lo, Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me; and I remained there with the kings of Persia. … 21 But I will shew thee that which is noted in the scripture of truth: and there is none that holdeth with me in these things, but Michael your prince.
- Daniel 12:1 And at that time shall Michael stand up, the great prince which standeth for the children of thy people: and there shall be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation even to that same time: and at that time thy people shall be delivered, every one that shall be found written in the book.
- In Joshua 5, as Joshua enters the land he meets the captain of the LORD’s host. This is not Jesus Christ, this is the same Michael who is the great prince that stands for the children of thy people.
- There’s some obscure contention between Michael and the devil about Moses’ body. Jude 1:9 Yet Michael the archangel, when contending with the devil he disputed about the body of Moses, durst not bring against him a railing accusation, but said, The Lord rebuke thee.
- Revelation 12:7 And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels,
- Here Michael is responsible for preaching instructions to the nation of Israel kind of like angels being given messages to churches in Revelation.
- But Michael is not the final word of God Almighty. Hebrews says there’s a greater voice that came from God and that was the Son of God, the LORD Jesus Christ.
- Hath in these last days spoken to us by his Son.

Promises associated with the inheritance (vss 25-31)
- Sickness is taken away
- Healthy livestock
- Enemies will fear you and your God
- Inheritance is piece by piece and slowly over time.
Warnings associated with the inheritance (vss 24-33)
- Destroy the images and other gods otherwise, you’ll become like the other cultures.
- Don’t make any agreements with them where you’re giving up your inheritance.
- If you don’t address these other cultures’ sin, you’ll become like them, you won’t be a light to them.
