Peace With His Enemies (Jeremiah #23)

Text: Jeremiah 37-39

Proverbs 16:7 When a man’s ways please the LORD, he maketh even his enemies to be at peace with him.

Double-minded king

  • A rebellious king Zedekiah asks Jeremiah to pray for him (vss 1-5)
  • Jeremiah’s answer (vss 6-10)
    • It looks like the LORD has answered a prayer, but He hasn’t.
    • People see what they want to see.
  • Jeremiah is beaten and arrested (vss 11-15)
    • Jeremiah leaves Jerusalem to live in Anathoth to avoid the coming destruction.
    • Jeremiah is found in Anathoth and beaten and arrested. This treatment of God’s messengers is the very attitude that infuriated the LORD.
  • Double-minded Zedekiah (vss 16-21)

Gentiles come to the light

  • Princes attempt to murder Jeremiah by throwing him in a pit (vss 38:1-6)
  • Ebedmelech helps Jeremiah (vss 38:7-13)
  • Curiosity is not belief
    • Jeremiah privately advises the king to obey the LORD (vss 38:14-23)
    • Jeremiah keeps the king’s secret (vss 38:24-28)
    • Just because someone is asking good questions doesn’t mean they are sincere or even on the right track.

Peace with his enemies

  • Babylon enters the city (vss 39:1-3)
  • King Zedekiah is captured by Babylonians (vss 39:4-7)
  • Jeremiah is protected by the Nebuchadnezzar (vss 39:11-14)
  • Proverbs 16:7 When a man’s ways please the LORD, he maketh even his enemies to be at peace with him.
