The Old Covenant (Exodus #34)

Text: Exodus 24

This chapter is a hinge on which the book of Exodus swings. What comes after this are details on how and who can approach God.

Elements of the covenant

  • Representation in this covenant was according to physical biology
  • The word of God was confessed, but not obeyed
  • The blood of bulls and goats could never take away sin
  • Moses must teach the commandments to future generations
  • Moses mediates.
    • Moses is an Israelite, but Moses is also faithful. So faithfulness is something the LORD was always after. And it will be part of the new covenant. In fact, it will be the only response that allows a person to enter the new covenant.
    • This covenant would wax old and be replaced with a new and better covenant in Jesus Christ. Hebrews 8-10 lays this out beautifully. This old covenant would be called faulty and incomplete.

A marriage contract

  • This exchange provided a kind of marriage contract with the nation with which the nation of Israel began nationally walking with God.
  • This marriage ended up in divorce according to Jeremiah. It also ends in the death of the husband when Jesus Christ dies for the sins of the nation. His death would make way for a new and better covenant since the death of the husband frees the wife to enter another marriage as Paul explains in Romans 7:1-4.
  • The new covenant would not be based on biology, but it would be offered to the Jew first.

Disappearance of the mediator

  • Moses disappears in the cloud and this is when the people begin to question what they need to do.
  • This failure of people is pandemic. Jesus is the mediator of the new covenant and has disappeared. Because of this, lots of questions arise about what’s really going on and what we should really be doing.
  • 1 Peter 1:6-9
