Text: Jeremiah 49:34-39
Egypt, Philistines, Moab, Ammon, Edom, Damascus, Kedar, and Elam – the eighth judgment.
Elam’s history
- Elam is an ancient nation that eventually became a province of Babylon. Daniel was there in Daniel 8 in Shushan, the palace.
- Elam is mentioned way back in Genesis in Abraham’s day more than a thousand years before Jeremiah’s prophecy.
- It would be located in part of Iran today.
The prophecy is divided into seven “I will” statements by God.
- I will break the bow of Elam (vs 35)
- I will scatter the Elamites (vs 36)
- I will cause Elam to be dismayed (vs 37)
- I will bring evil upon Elam (vs 37)
- I will send the sword to Elam (vs 37)
- Ezekiel 32:24-25
- I will set my throne in Elam (vs 38)
- The LORD will put his authority in Elam which he did.
- I will bring again the captivity of Elam ( vs 39)
- The LORD will salvage something of the Elamites in this promise.
- They are mentioned as people present at the preaching of Peter in Acts 2:9, 17. The bringing of the captivity is the salvation that the LORD Jesus Christ brings.
The role of the prophet is to speak for God explaining God’s design in what was happening and what would happen. Jeremiah was an interpreter of historic events. He understood the times, as one phrase puts it.
These fulfilled prophecies are part of what substantiates this Bible.
