Discord

Text: Proverbs 6:16,19

Illustrate discord on the piano. This is what it sounds like.

Discord is to be divisive, to cause factions, and to bring division among people for which there should be unity. To say or do things that cause distrust among one another. Paul begged the Corinthians to all speak the same thing, and that there would be no divisions among them, that they’d be joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment.

People have no regard for other people’s lives when it comes to gossip or creating distrust. This divisiveness breaks down churches and hurts families. This divisiveness takes a huge emotional toll on people. It burdens people’s hearts with unnecessary troubles that have no reason to exist other than the discord created by this person. It divides houses and generates anger at people for imaginary problems.

Because discord is so destructive, God said he hates it. (Proper Hatred)

The condemnation is the strongest terms

  • This divisive person is an abomination to the LORD. There isn’t a stronger word than to say someone is an abomination to God.
  • An abomination is someone who causes hatred and disgust. Is God love? Yes. Does God hate some things? Yes. You might say that the LORD hates THINGS in the list of six, but he that soweth discord is the person.
  • He hates all workers of iniquity (Psalm 5:5).
  • Look at verse 15, quickly and without remedy.

The character responsible for this divisiveness

  • The question is Who? There is a person responsible for your distrust, for your anger towards your brother or sister. Who is the farmer God hates who is planting these seeds of hatred and distrust?
  • He’s sneaky and manipulative. You’ll be part of his army before you know it. And if you lack discernment, you’ll be in it and never know it.
  • Froward means difficult to deal with, contrary, and argumentative. They are contentious. They’re looking for a fight so they can prove themselves righteous. It’s ironic in that way. This person wants to prove how right they are all the while practicing evil and gossip.
  • This is not someone who just misspoke or maybe said something out of turn. This is a person who plots and plans to divide a flock and gather sheep to himself like a wolf. He preys on weak sheep and plans his divisiveness.
  • Don’t ever be the one responsible for discord among Christians.
    • If you choose to be, one thing is for sure, God hates you for sowing discord.
    • There is another thing that has to be in question which is whether or not you even have eternal life. You can’t love God who you haven’t seen and hate his people who you have seen. Do you think God would actively oppose and hate someone who has eternal life? You need to be very honest about that instead of chalking it up to, I’m saved, but we all mess up. Because that is NOT Bible language.

The course of this discord

  • Discord is planted like sowing seed.
    • But it’s not as scattered as the sower and the seed in Jesus’ parable.
    • The sower of discord sows among the brethren in verse 19. Among those who name the name of Christ.
  • Discord is like a seed in that it is first small and insignificant. But it contains the genetics for the tree that grows in time.
  • Discord is planted with a wicked mouth.
  • Some seeds take longer to sprout and grow. The grumbling and murmuring is very subtle for a long time.
  • A house divided cannot stand.

Don’t let discord be sown

  • Some soil isn’t good to receive seeds of discord. You need to be that
  • Maintain a right heart and spirit. You let a little anger or bitterness creep in and you’ll be easy prey to get caught up in this world. But you’ll be discerning if you maintain a humble, forgiving, loving heart and spirit towards people.
  • Refuse to listen
  • Refuse to let little things become big things
  • Refuse to make your opinion equal to clear godly wisdom.
  • Avoid them. Mark them which cause divisions and offences contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them.
