Man’s Honor
Text: Psalm 8
The musical notation for this song says it is for a stringed instrument. Gittith sounds like a guitar. It is a stringed instrument.
Contrast of God’s presence (vss 1-2)
- The LORD is in the perfecting business. Perfecting saints, perfecting ways, and perfecting praise. The contrast of God’s glory is so far out of reach for mankind. We fall short of the glory of God as Paul said. But God’s children reach the ears of heaven with praise.
- Jesus Christ quotes this in Matthew 21:15-16 to the religious leaders when he entered Jerusalem as the King. Matthew 21:15 shows these are not physical children. These are children of God who desire the sincere milk of the word
- Emphasis on the spiritual presence of God
- 1 Corinthians 1:27-29…that no flesh should glory…
- Matthew 18:1-4… greatest in the kingdom of heaven
Consideration of man’s place (vss 3-8)
- David considers the great honor God has given man to rule over his creation. That has always stayed the same.
- Sin and death entered and then became the ruler over man.
- This leads to the work of Jesus Christ as THE man and the kind of man creation was made for. Jesus Christ is the type of man creation was built for. This explains Christianity as a description of how life is to operate.
- Hebrews 2:5-8.
- What are the things that contribute to life? What would the owner’s manual of life look like? It looks like Christianity. Jesus Christ is the Shepherd of souls and the way of life. What makes up life? Truth, love, longsuffering, kindness, discipline, joy, hope.
Creation glorifies God (vs 9)
- The heavens declare the glory of God.
