Psalm 12 – Our Spiritual Wrestling

Our Spiritual Wrestling

Psalm 12

(Classic David and Goliath)

The music is for an 8-stringed instrument apparently. That is what Sheminith means.

David’s theology is very sophisticated and personal. What I mean is that David’s understanding of God is that He is not fundamentally selfish. Most gods seem to be bought off.

Cry for help (vs 1)

  • People appreciate godliness. Whether they know it or not, godliness is what makes for good friendships, good societies, good families, and good relationships.
  • Godlessness becomes treacherous and becomes a selfish dog-eat-dog world.

Cause of trouble (vs 2)

  • Faithfulness is gone as evidenced by the lies and instability.
  • The world may say lack of money but the scriptures identify sin as the source of problems. Perilous times come because of sin. Lies, flattery, and bribery, are the things that make times hard.

Coming of the Lord (vss 3-7)

  • David explains that the LORD cares for truth and innocence.
  • David says the LORD will handle cutting off these wicked conversations.
  • The words of the wicked are compared to God’s words. The wicked words corrupt relationships in families and society, but God’s words clean up and breathe life into families and society. And God words are true as promises, but the wicked’s words are lies and vain.

Curse of the wicked (vs 8)

  • This is the principle that Paul explains in Ephesians 6:11-13.
  • We wrestle not against flesh and blood
