Generosity (Proverbs #12)

This is the classic good Samaritan story. This is the application of faith in generosity. The opportunity to do good is a place where three things come together; a who, what, and when. The metrics, the conditions are who, what, and when.

What is good?

  • Exodus 23:4-5 If thou meet thine enemy’s ox or his ass going astray, thou shalt surely bring it back to him again. 5 If thou see the ass of him that hateth thee lying under his burden, and wouldest forbear to help him, thou shalt surely help with him.
  • James 2:15-16 says, If a brother or sister be naked, and destitute of daily food, And one of you say unto them, Depart in peace, be ye warmed and filled; notwithstanding ye give them not those things which are needful to the body; was doth it profit? Withhold not good for the things which are needful to the body.

Who is it owed to?

  • Law enforcement roundtable about taking in the homeless.
  • According to Galatians 6:10, we should do good unto all men. But we should especially do good to them who are the household of faith.
  • If a man doesn’t work he shouldn’t eat. 2 Thessalonians 3:10
  • 1 Timothy 5:3-13

When should it be given?

  • Galatians 6:10 says As we therefore have opportunity. You should do good during those times when it is in the power of thine hand to do it, and when thou hast it by thee. The Lord said, in those times not to wait till tomorrow.
  • In 1 John 3:17, John asked, But whoso hath this world’s good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him? So, John wrote in 1 John 3:18 My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth.
  • James 4:14-17

The opportunity is a fork in the road where you choose either good or evil. Notice the contrast from verse 27 and verse 29.
