Gainsaying of Core (Jude #5)

Rebellion

  • The last thing Jude warns about are rebels.
  • It’s contention that will not be told what to do by anyone. It’s an emotion that hates instruction as Proverbs says.
  • Jude says they despise dominion and speak evil of dignities in verse 8. In verse 10 he says they speak evil of those things which they know not other than what their base desires to eat, drink, sleep, and fool around tell them to do. And even in those things they defile themselves. In verse 16 Jude gives further description.
  • Verses describing contentious people
    • Proverbs 21:19 It is better to dwell in the wilderness, than with a contentious and an angry woman.
    • Proverbs 26:21 As coals are to burning coals, and wood to fire; so is a contentious man to kindle strife.
    • Proverbs 27:15 A continual dropping in a very rainy day and a contentious woman are alike.

Another angelic illustration

  • Jude uses another angelic example to show that a class of people who had familiarity with the LORD turned against the Lord’s leadership because of how they felt inside themselves.
  • The body is Moses doesn’t appear to be mentioned anywhere else. It’s assumed that this has to do with Moses after he’s dead. Interesting that Moses shows up with Elijah on the Mount of Transfiguration in Matthew 17, so though Moses wasn’t taken up alive like Elijah, somehow he ends up appearing in the glory of Jesus Christ before the resurrection.
  • The idea that the devil brings accusation against the leadership of the LORD to damn the people is clear.
  • In Zechariah 3 Satan is the accuser; he digs up the dirt and attempts to either bring the judgment of God on someone or to make God an unjust judge.

Described in Korah’s rebellion

  • Numbers 16 describes the rebellion and consequences.
  • What defined Korah? Was it the way he dressed? Was it the food he ate? It was what came out of his mouth.
    • You’ve got this warning by the LORD in Matthew 7:15-20 about knowing something by its fruit. But they’re not known by appearance because they look like sheep. And it’s not that they’re diet is any different. What’s different is the fruit, as in, the fruit of the lips.
    • They are false prophets. That means what is false about them is what they say.
