Led by the Spirit: Part 1 (2 Samuel #8)

Let’s begin by looking at verse 10. The LORD God of hosts was with David. The presence of God’s Spirit is a mark of the LORD’s approval of someone. This chapter deals with the leading of the Spirit of God and the expansion of the nation of Israel under David’s leadership. Look at verse 10, there is God’s leadership. Look at verse 12. Look at verse 19 as David requests God’s leadership. Look at verse 24, how the Spirit of God literally led.

Unification of the nation (vss 1-3)

  • The nation of Israel is unifying under David.
  • One body, but many members.
  • One head, but many minds.
  • One purpose, but many jobs.
  • Ephesians 5:18, 21, 30-32

Patience in well doing (vss 4-5)

  • Notice David is 30 years old when he begins to reign. He was told as a teenager that he would be king and for over a decade
  • David served a man who hated him for years.
  • David fought the battles the Lord wanted fought for years without being exalted.
  • David withheld himself from revenge for years when he had the opportunity to do so.
  • David patiently endured God’s inactivity on his behalf.

Christ’s spirit is greater than the spirit in the world (vss 6-10)

  • The enemies of God scoff and make fun of God’s army as lame and blind. Jerusalem was an enemy stronghold and a place of giants.
  • There is the typical taunting in warfare between the Jebusites and the Israelites. The Jebusites mock the Israelites as incompetent and incapable of running a successful war. To which David responds in verse 8 in a trash talking way, that it’ll be a shame when these incapable and incompetent Israelites are running your country sh
  • These Jebusites believed themselves to be superior to Israel, but they are no match when the LORD is ready to move them off His mountain.
  • God’s presence is greater than he that is in the world.
  • It’s like a boat in the water. The ocean water puts pressure on all sides of that boat. But that boat can float above the water because greater is the hull of the boat than the seas that beat against it. And the Spirit of God is just greater than the spirit in the world.
