Forgiveness (2 Samuel #17)

A sermon against MY sin (vss 1-6)

  • God sends a Preacher – 2 Samuel 12:1-6 – Thank God for Nathan who is willing to preach to a king.
  • Nathan tells a parable to awake David’s conscience. David is angry over the man’s lack of pity for a little lamb in the parable, but David has just committed adultery and murdered a man and is angry over a lamb?!

Personal conviction (vss 7-14)

  • Conviction is when you stop thinking the Lord is talking about someone else and realize he’s talking about you.
  • God’s word to David brings conviction – 2 Samuel 12:7 – Thou art the man.
  • Remember that sometimes the grace of God takes the shape of a preacher pointing out your sin.
  • Repentance is the proper response to God. David says I have sinned against the LORD.

Forgiveness does not erase consequences (vss 15-23)

  • Forgiveness is based on the death of the innocent. But not just any innocent death, the death that is acceptable to God.
  • Forgiveness does not eliminate consequences
  • 2 Samuel 12:13 – David seeks forgiveness by faith (Psalm 51).
    • Romans 4:5-8 But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness. 6 Even as David also describeth the blessedness of the man, unto whom God imputeth righteousness without works, 7 Saying, Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven, and whose sins are covered. 8 Blessed is the man to whom the Lord will not impute sin.
  • 2 Samuel 12:14 – Forgiveness doesn’t mean consequences are nullified. David is forgiven, but Uriah is still dead. You can be forgiven and still live with the consequences of sin.
  • A compelling reason to train your children, to stay out of the world and away from sin is that if they ever get hold of something it will run its course.
  • 2 Samuel 12:23 – God takes the baby.  Babies go to be with the Lord.

Confirmation of forgiveness (vss 24-25)

  • 2 Samuel 12:24-25 God gives David and Bathsheba another baby, proving God has put the sin behind Him.
  • New life is a sign of forgiveness.

Crown is given to those who get back in the battle (vss 26-31)

  • Sin does not have to mean a shipwrecked life
  • David has to get back in the battle, he has to put himself back in a position of obedience.
  • If you don’t return to a place of obedience, you will repeat this process.
  • God has crowns for fallen people who get back in the fight!
  • Well done thou good and faithful servant.
