What Could Have Been (Psalm #81)

Celebrate and instruct a truth (vss 1-3)

  • Music is the best teacher.
  • Get prepared to celebrate light from the Almighty God! Get prepared for light to shine.
  • This is light from above, so it is glorious.

Look to the only true God! (vss 4-7)

  • God established this in Joseph
  • Israel is rescued from Egypt and Egypt’s gods. Exodus 2:23 And it came to pass in process of time, that the king of Egypt died: and the children of Israel sighed by reason of the bondage, and they cried, and their cry came up unto God by reason of the bondage. And the Lord removed their shoulder from Egypt’s burden after they cried for him.
  • God powerfully delivered the nation of Israel showing the gods of the nations are nothing and there is only one true God. Those following other gods are wandering around in darkness, unable to get away from the sin that entangles them. But God’s deliverance is real and powerful.
  • Therefore, he gave them this law

God’s people won’t listen to Him (vss 8-12)

  • Have no other gods before me, but they wouldn’t listen.
  • Sounds like Romans 1
  • The Lord gave them what they looked for. They just find out that what they want isn’t what they thought it was.

God’s regrets (vss 13-16)

  • Regrets come from failing to hear the LORD.
  • The Lord was heartbroken about what could’ve been.
  • God would fight their battles
  • God would feed them to satisfaction
  • God would do what He’s done in the past, but how easy people forget.
  • Jesus’ words in Matthew 23 are the same spirit, O Jerusalem, Jerusalem!
