Text: Genesis 37
And now we enter into the history of the best type of Jesus Christ in the first book of the Bible. Joseph is that type of Christ.
The father’s love (vss 1-4)
- Joseph brings an evil report of his brethren. Jesus Christ points out the sin of his brethren.
- Joseph was loved by his father more than all his children because he’s Rachel’s child and Jacob is older when Joseph is born. Jesus Christ is loved by the Father more than any other of his creatures.
- Joseph is given a special coat as a sign of the father’s love. Jesus Christ is clothed in righteousness which is a seal of the Father’s love.
- Joseph is hated by his brethren because of this favoritism. Jesus Christ is hated of his Jewish brethren because the Father approved him.
Joseph’s future reign is despised (vss 5-11)
- Joseph is given a clear understanding of his future rule. Jesus Christ is given a clear understanding of his future reign.
- Joseph is hated more because of his future. Jesus Christ is hated for the prospect of his future rule.
- Joseph’s brethren envied him. Jesus Christ is delivered up to Pilate because of envy.
The father sends the son (vss 12-14)
- Jacob sends Joseph to see why his brethren have moved the flocks to another field. Jesus is sent to see why his brethren have moved the flocks to another field.
- Joseph agrees to go and Jesus agrees to seek that which was lost.
His brothers are angry that they’ve been found out (vss 15-22)
- Joseph finds that his brethren have moved his father’s flocks to a stranger’s field. Jesus finds that his brethren have moved God’s flock to a stranger’s field.
- Joseph’s brothers are angered that they’ve been found out. Jesus angers the Jews when he finds them feeding the wrong pasture.
His brothers try to get rid of Joseph (vss 23-28)
- Joseph is cast into a pit by his brothers because they’re sin is found out.
- Joseph is sold by Judah to strangers. Jesus Christ is sold by Judas to strangers.
The brothers attempt to replace the blood of Joseph with the blood of a goat (vss 29-36)
- The scene is gruesome. Reuben brings back a bloody, torn up coat of many colors and Jacob is heartbroken. It’s dad seeing the bloody jeans of his son and obviously thinking the worst.
- The death of Joseph is overwhelming to Jacob. When Jesus died on the cross the sky went dark almost like the Father turned away so as not to look.
