Correction Brings Wisdom (Proverbs #10)

Approach of correction

  • Correction is a manner of obtaining wisdom.
  • Solomon has presented three ways wisdom is obtained: by separation from certain people, by asking and seeking wisdom, and by forsaking your own understanding and trusting the LORD. Correction is the fourth.
  • The motive of correction is in the word. To correct, to make the behavior right or the thinking right. It’s not punitive; it’s not retaliation. It’s correction

Administration of correction

  • Notice it is the LORD’s correction, not mom and dad’s.
  • Hebrews 12:4-11
    • You know what the LORD is dealing with.
    • It’s not joyous. Your joy is limited at this time.
  • Physical pain
  • Proverbs 22:15 Foolishness is bound in the heart of a child; but the rod of correction shall drive it far from him. That is correction from mom and dad that explains pain is a deterrent from foolishness. But this is correction from God.
    • Paul and the thorn in his flesh that kept his pride in check.
    • Correction came in the form of the answer “No” from God in prayer.
    • Habakkuk 1:12 Art thou not from everlasting, O LORD my God, mine Holy One? we shall not die. O LORD, thou hast ordained them for judgment; and, O mighty God, thou hast established them for correction.
    • Sometimes God’s will is a thorn or God’s will is a yoke. (Jeremiah 28:16 Therefore thus saith the LORD; Behold, I will cast thee from off the face of the earth: this year thou shalt die, because thou hast taught rebellion against the LORD.)
  • Scriptural Correction – 2 Timothy 3:16

Attitude towards correction

  • Don’t despise it. Don’t get weary of it. Why does he say those things?  Because he said correction is grievous. You have to find the value in it.
  • Proverbs 15:10 Correction is grievous unto him that forsaketh the way: and he that hateth reproof shall die.
  • Wisdom’s value as merchandise
    • Ability to bargain, to transact, to trade; a commodity.  Object of commerce.  Better than gold or silver.
    • When it comes to human action in the market, wisdom is better than gold or silver.
    • Wisdom is better than gold and silver because it can’t be corrupted or stolen.
  • Wisdom’s value as precious
  • Wisdom’s value as time
  • Wisdom’s value as riches and honor
  • Wisdom’s value as peace
  • Wisdom’s value as life
  • Wisdom’s value as the architecture of all things by God
